According to Pro Football Reference, it takes 50 career games to qualify for career W-L %. Matt LaFleur has coached 49 games. On September 11th, LaFleur and the Packers kick off their season on the road against the Vikings. Win or lose, he will qualify for all-time W-L rankings.

With a win, LaFleur will have a career record of 40–10 (.800) and would rank above Guy Chamberlin in first place all-time. With a loss, he will be 39–11 (.780) and still be in first place after week one.

In the chart below, I’m showing “Real W/L %” and “W-L%”. Before 1970, ties weren’t included in W-L%, after 1972 they counted as half of a win, which is the way it should be. Pro Football Reference uses the original math of not counting ties before 1970. I checked the HOF site, and they count ties as 1/2 win even for the old-timers. We will use the correct math used by the HOF.

LaFleur has put himself in position to make history as a result of a 13–3, 13–3 and 13–4 record to start his career. If he begins the 2022 season 0–2, he will still hold on to the record. But 0–3 and he’ll drop to 2nd place. A final record this year of 12–5 or better, and he will carry his place in history into the off-season. A record of 11–6 or worse and he will enter the off season below Chamberlain.

A very impressive start to his career. Yes, he has Aaron Rodgers, but Rodgers has been a starter since 2008 and the last three years are the best three year in terms of W-L% for any Rodgers led team. We don’t know where LaFleur’s career or season will end up, but one thing is for sure…when the game clock strikes 0:00 on September 11, 2022, Matt LaFluer will make history, and will sit atop the mountain over coaches like Guy Chamberlin, John Madden, Vince Lombardi, Geroge Halas and Don Shula, at least in this one metric. Congrats to LaFleur and Packers fans!
